Video: Cyclist punches prone rival at end of bike race

Attacker apologises but has been dropped from his team

A cyclist has apologised to a fellow competitor following a violent incident which took place at the Longsjo Classic in Fitchburg, Massachusetts, just after the men crossed the finish line. In the video, Jerome Townsend, a former nude model, can be seen punching Dave Warner as he lies on the ground in an incident that is currently being investigated by USA Cycling.

Neither man required medical attention, but The Sentinel and Enterprise reports that both riders were spoken to by police. They concluded that it was a matter better left for USA Cycling and Townsend could face several penalties, including a suspension.

However, USA Cycling say that as well as the incident caught on camera, they will also look into what preceded it, raising the possibility that Warner too could be sanctioned. Longsjo Classic race director, Allan Cote, said: "There was some bumping going on, which sometimes happens. Apparently this time it was a little more aggressive than usual."

Despite an apology, Townsend's team, BikeReg Elite Cycling, have fired the rider. On his Facebook page, Townsend wrote:

“I, Jerome Townsend, would like to apologize for my actions following the 2015 Fitchburg Longsjo Classic Criterium. I acted in a way that is detrimental to my team, and my sport. I hope that people do not blame my team (BikeReg.com Elite Cycling Team), the race or its staff, or the city of Fitchburg in general for my actions as it was me who acted poorly.”

Townsend recently graduated from Clark University with a degree in physics, but has previously worked as a nude model. Interviewed by Worcester Magazine in July 2014, he said that cycling had helped him become comfortable with his body. "I am comfortable with my body, and I think that part of that comfort comes from years of professional cycling and having to change literally wherever and whenever."

This is far from being the first occasion when two racing cyclists have come to blows and scuffles have even been seen at elite level. Last year, Gianluca Brambilla and Ivan Rovny were kicked off the Vuelta a Espana for a bout of mid-stage fisticuffs in which they carried on at each other for a good 30 seconds or so, even while cycling along.

Alex has written for more cricket publications than the rest of the road.cc team combined. Despite the apparent evidence of this picture, he doesn't especially like cake.

Seriously fellas, road racing is not for the wall flower or the shy and retiring among you. You may well get your hair mussed up or find that your desired wheel to follow has already been chosen by someone bigger, stronger or more assertive than you. You can laugh about such inconveniences over an Americano with soy milk later but you do need to get a grip.

I have been in races where points were made with fists at high speed, and being stupid or abusive or dangerous in races was discouraged by physical means.

It's like chess on wheels, but you will get a clout if you mess about.

To be honest the video is a lot tamer than the story made out.

Id take a few whacks over a crash any day.

Just the one handbag in this instance.
Perhaps the other guy was an artist who 'undersized him'.

Let's hope the USA Cycling investigation bans him for life. I'd rather get beaten on the bike by an ex-pro who's hopped up on EPO than have a douche like this guy actually start a fight.

What a lot of big blouses you lot are.
If someone was being a dick at a bike race, endangering me while racing, I'd give him a smack when I caught him too.

It was hardly a savage beating, just a reminder not to be dick.

Glad I don't know you. Punching someone is unacceptable (and illegal) except in self defence or martial arts. Call me a blouse (whatever that is) if you wish, but I'd like to believe at least some of us have actually evolved from the blokeish, Clarkson- like swamp.

Poor behaviour. Probably drives a car as a liesure pursuit, and is an HGV driver on his day job. Bloody cyclists, eh? Shocking bunch.

Typical behaviour of a former nude model.

Might be an over-the-top reaction, but a reaction nonetheless. There are many riders who race dangerously or illegally, who put their fellow competitors at risk. If officials don't do anything about it, you will see riders taking matters into their own hands, rightly or wrongly.

Definitely more interesting than noting the extra curricular activities of Jerome would be pointing out that the race has significant history in the United States as the 2nd oldest professional-level race (currently strongly focused on amateur fields) with former winners such as Lyne Bessette, Evie Stevens, Louis Garneau, Davis Phinney, Lance Armstrong, Tyler Hamilton, Chris Horner, and Jonathan Page, among others.

The race began in 1960 as the Longsjo Memorial Race, in memory of long-time Fitchburg resident Art Longsjo, the first person to ever compete in both the summer and winter Olympics in the same year (something now impossible due to the staggered Olympic games schedule).

It formerly existed as a stage race, rather than the current omnium of 3 weekend crits.

I used to model for art classes back when I had a torso and not a barrel - does this mean I can legitimately call myself an ex nude-model too? Hope so, it obviously *means something* to someone and makes me deliciously morally ambiguous, louche and bohemian. I will be pleased.

As an aside, what relevance does his past career as a nude model have on this story? I mean, clearly none, but that hasn't stopped it being mentioned. Twice.

Because cycling has made him happy with his body. This I agree with and am comfortable with my form. Unfortunately the Police say that the tea/coffee aisle in Waitrose isn't the place to show it off.

Try the Produce aisle. It's more accepted there.

Avoid the frozen section though, because, well, you know...that and stuff.

That must be unique in being an actual apology, rather than merely being sorry people were upset by his actions.
