Martyn Ashton appeal nears £50,000 (+ video)

Donations from well-wishers flood in for paralysed stunt cyclist

Fans of Martyn Ashton, the stunt cyclist left paralysed when he crashed during a show at Silverstone in 2013, have raised nearly £50,000 to help pay for his rehabilitation from his injuries.

Last Friday, the star of the video Road Bike Party said that he planned on selling the Colnago C59 Disc bike that featured in the sequel to pay for his medical costs.

His admirers were having none of that, and encouraged him to set up a GoFundMe page instead so they could contribute without him having to part with the bike.

At the time of writing, that has raised more than £47,000.

The appeal has gone viral, featured everywhere from BBC Wales Today to The LAD Bible.

Before his life-changing accident, Martyn was someone many aspired to emulate in terms of his riding skills.

And while the word ‘inspirational’ may be overused at times, we can’t think of a better one to describe the way he has dealt with what has happened to him.

Martyn’s mates Danny MacAskill and Chris Akrigg helped him complete that Road Bike Party 2 video.

It’s Christmas. Let’s keep adding to a gift that will help out someone who is an example to all of us.
