road.cc newsRider killed during Dursley RC 25 mile time trial
Tragedy occurred at this weekend's Dursly RC 25mile time trial when Alex Anderson of North Hampshire RC was killed after being hit from behind by a car on the A419.
Other competitors stopped to give assistance and an off duty paramedic was quickly on the scene too, but sadly Mr Anderson died of his injuries later in hospital.
The time trial was taking place on Saturday evening as most of the country was watching England's opening game in the World Cup. Competitors described the roads as quiet, the fatal collision happened at 7.45pm just after the Cirencester turn on the U46 course on a long straight section of road with no junctions in conditions of perfect visibility. As yet there are no details of what happened to the driver involved.
Other competitors talking on the Timetrialing forum afterwards said that while traffic levels dropped noticeably as kick off for the big match approached traffic speed did not on a section of road described by one “as a motorway in all but name”. According to reports next weekends Bristol South CC 50 mile time trial which uses the same section of road has now been cancelled.
Anyone who has any information on the incident should contact Gloucestershire Police on 0845 090 1234 quoting incident 498 of June 12.
In May 2009 Major Rhys Thomas was killed on the A1 near St Neots during the Icknield RC 25 the 19 year old woman driver who killed him was sentenced to 21 months in jail earlier this year.

Sad news indeed ....
i drive parts of that road and it scares me in the car,
let alone on a bike !
the issue is not with the road but the driver that was using it. I started over an hour before Alex and the traffic counts were very low (probably half that of my daily commute)and the conditions were excellent, as were the warning signs placed out by the organisers. yes the road is fast but with excellent visibility for miles it is one of the safeset roads I've time trialled on. This awful incident was caused by one driver not paying attention, something that we can not protect ourselves from no matter how hard we try.
How awful. I was very close to here on the Cheltenham Flyer Audax in March. Thanks to the tendency of Audax routes to avoid A roads wherever possible, we didn't touch that bit of the A419.
