Alpe di Poti – Strava data for the crucial climb on stage 8 of the Giro d’Italia

Previous stage saw live on-board images being broadcast for the first time in the race

Stage 8 of the Giro d’Italia from Foligno to Arezzo is most notable for the second of the day’s classified climbs. With the summit 17km from the finish and featuring 6.4km of dirt roads, Alpe di Poti promises to be the crucial juncture in the day’s racing.

The Strava segment is 8.6km long at an average gradient of 6% and the current King of the Mountain is none other than Andrey Amador, who checked out the climb with Fran Ventoso back in March. Amador is currently 17th overall, 1m20s behind Tom Dumoulin, but will be hoping to improve on that position in the coming days.

Amador and Ventoso completed the climb in 26m51s averaging 370 watts. A number of other pros feature on the Strava leaderboard too with Steven Kruijswijk, currently fifth in the Giro, perhaps the most eye-catching name in eighth place.

Following an agreement between RCS Sport and host broadcaster RAI, yesterday’s stage, won by Andre Greipel, saw live on-board images being broadcast for the first time during the Giro d’Italia. Russian rider Andrey Solomennikov from the Gazprom–Colnago team gave fans a taste of what it is like to be in the saddle, right at the heart of the race.

Alex has written for more cricket publications than the rest of the road.cc team combined. Despite the apparent evidence of this picture, he doesn't especially like cake.
