Sir Bradley Wiggins, Great Britain's most decorated Olympian ever, is switching from summer to winter sports after he was confirmed to be among the contestants in the new series of the Channel 4 show, The Jump.
The 36-year-old, who announced his retirement from professional cycling last week, will join 13 other contestants from the world of sport and entertainment for the fourth series of the show, which attracted controversy last year after competitors including former Olympic champion swimmer Rebecca Adlington, gymnast Beth Tweddle and the actress Tina Hobley were injured while filming.
Joining the five-time Olympic champion and 2012 Tour de France winner in the new series will be para-cyclist Kadeena Cox. At the Rio Paralympic Games this summer, she won gold medals in both cycling and athletics, aking the T38 400m on the athletics track and gold in the C4-5 para-cycling time trial.
Other stars featuring include the model Caprice Bourret, former Liverpool and England footballer Robbie Fowler, Olympic taekwondo champion Jade Jones and former England rugby union captain, Jason Robinson.
During the series, they will tackle events including skeleton, bobsleigh, ski cross, giant slalom and, of course, ski jumping.
Wiggins said that skiing is "a big passion" of his. "It was a mix of that and the other committed names this year that made me want to sign up.
"Major retiring Olympians such as Sir Steve Redgrave have also trod this path.
"I see this as a sporting challenge and want to go out there and win it.
"Just don't call me a celebrity," he added.
In September, however, Wiggins had suggested that taking part in reality TV shows were the last thing he had planned for his retirement.
In an interview with the Guardian, he said: "I don’t know how I want to be remembered on the bike.
"But I don’t want people to look back in 10 years and say, ‘Do you remember that famous cyclist with the sideburns? Whatever happened to him?’
"And it’s like, ‘He was on the telly for ages, weren’t he? On all those game shows. And then he sort of disappeared.’ And then you read about me in the Mirror, walking through the park or something, you know, down and out."
He added: "So I think about it a lot. Where do I want to be in 20 years’ time?"
There's no confirmation as yet about when the series will air.

He just can't make-up his mind what he wants to do next.........!
The 'what would Ace Face do?' magic 8-ball doesn't give 'retire gracefully' as an option.
Really Brad? I can understand why some athletes agree to go on this sort of crap as they haven't had the paid careers folk like Wiggo have. I can only assume it's for the limelight or I suppose some form of move into a media personality. Can it really be financial?
Sad. IMHO.
This from the Guardian article
Wiggins’s comments jar slightly with those made in an interview with the Guardian last year, when he made his thoughts on reality shows clear: “You don’t want to become just this pointless celebrity who’s here, there and everywhere, going on Can’t Cook, Won’t Cook. I don’t want to become a captain on Question Of Sport and go on every week playing the fool.”
File him under the take all comments with a pinch of salt category.
Yep. Round here, they call that 'Gobshite'.
He's just trying to gain as much financially as he can before his own celebrity status begins to fade. You can't blame him really, especially with the current fuss about his medication, if that gains momentum a lot of TV companies would stear well clear (or pay him less...).
I hope he wins; should generate some entertainment around here in the quiet months. Haters gotta hate right?! Go Wiggo!
Oh sounds like a TV Fail to me...
Wiggo should have opted for a charity extreme cycle ride across America or something.. like what that Eddie Izzard did with the marathons a day cross Africa.. he could have had guest riders with him to make it interesting...
"celebrities"
Oh goody, there are many years of this type of fascinating article to look forward to. 'V Pendleton rides a horse', and 'children's author C Hoy drives a car' will be nothing compared to the exploits of Wiggins in the decades to come, I feel sure.
Plus there is very little pollen around in the Alps at this time of year.
I was half-tempted to write pretty much the same thing as the closing line of the article.
Does anyone actually watch The Jump?
The emergency services?
I do. It has moments of wonderful comedy, schadenfreude and 'epic fail'. Interspersed by quite a lot of filler, admittedly. I care not whether the participants are 'celebs', merely that they're largely rubbish and falling over for my entertainment. This makes me a bad person. I don't care.
Apart from when people get injured because of total incompetence (Hobley's accident last year). That wasn't funny and I'm amazed they've got another series.
Watched some of the last series; there were some pretty serious injuries and I'm amazed they're getting another run. They must have a pretty understanding insurance company, or the premium is sky high. Tina Hobley is still recovering from her injuries.
