Australian resorts to oBike to finish triathlon after suffering a mechanical

Top speed of 18km/h and no water bottle holder – but at least it was intact

Dockless bike sharing services are primarily intended for people making everyday urban trips. They’re not generally used for racing, but when Lachie Kerin suffered a mechanical during the Challenge Iskandar Puteri triathlon in Malaysia last weekend, he hired an oBike to complete the event.

Tough Asia reports that just under 60km into the bike leg, Kerin came to an unscheduled stop.

Writing on Instagram, he said: “I managed to snap my steerer meaning my handlebars, frame and fork were no longer together.”

Rather than abandon, he spotted a couple of oBikes and picked one up.

“Luckily for me, I was able to muster a city bike and get the last 32ish km done before making a lot of mates on a nice jog/stroll in skin melting heat. The city bike, despite its top speed of about 18km/hr and no water bottle holder (not ideal for 2hr in Asian heat), was actually pretty damn fun, albeit not ideal. It made for a looooong day but an epic memory and one I won't forget soon!”

Alex has written for more cricket publications than the rest of the road.cc team combined. Despite the apparent evidence of this picture, he doesn't especially like cake.

I was there. The marshals were using the obikes to get around the course so he borrowed one of theirs to complete the bike leg. I believe he was intent on completing because it was a limited pro field so he was guaranteed some cash as long as he didn't DNF..

Hmmm. Convenient that he already had the app on his phone?
