Video: Sorry Mate I Didn’t See You of the Day

Motorist says “look how big my car is” to argue there was minimal impact

A departure from our Near Miss of the Day feature today, in that this particular motorist didn’t miss. The explanation? “I feel like you’re the one that jumped in front of my car because I didn’t even see you.”

She may well feel that way, but watching the footage it’s hard to see how a cyclist could have just materialised in front of her on the otherwise empty A576/Gerald Road roundabout in Salford.

Video uploader David also said that he had two lights on the flash setting – one on the handlebars, one on his head.

In a tweet, he added:” She had a baby in the car too. You'd think that would be enough of a reason to pay attention to the road.”

David said that the collision left him with a sore back and buckled front and rear wheels.

Not that the driver admitted any fault.

“As soon as I saw you, I’ve stomped on my brakes. Look how big my car is. Really, if I’d have hit you with any impact, you would have been on the floor.”

Alex has written for more cricket publications than the rest of the road.cc team combined. Despite the apparent evidence of this picture, he doesn't especially like cake.

Please please, anyone who ends up on the receiving end of even a minor incident, Don't let it go, unless the driver is obviously admitting error and is sorry etc.

Because, yes he or she, could allow their complacency, bigotry or just plain  crass driving to one day kill someone

This is not just someone wanting to add to the debate simply for its own sake, it's someone who every day is suffering the gut wrenching pain and anguish that anyone who loses a child will endure forever

We lost our 25 year old club cyclist son to a van driver who hit him at 65 mph from behind, and who as always  " didn't see him"

The unthinkable had happened

Amazingly through the encouragement and support of club mates, but with a broken heart, I ride again.

Some might say how the hell can he do that? Well, in the face of the worst things, you can but it's only those like me, who have been there, who will understand  It really really is "Feel Fear but do it anyway"

So far, I have not had any bad experiences, but the fear is always acutely there. It's sad that I  know that my continued survival (and that of all of us here) is mainly down to luck  in that most drivers seem to be aware, capable, responsible and therefore, safe

It's the others that sorely worry me and the only thing that will stop them from remaining the severe threat that they are, is for them to be spoken to in the  only language they will understand:  Promise them a severe and lasting consequence of their actions i.e. Jail for a long long time

I am angry that I have to feel fear when on my bike, everyone has a right to feel safe   Including cyclists

I'm not hanging up my wheels any time soon

My club supports RogadPeace

Not many others do but maybe there's an opportunity to help redress car/bike equality through helping RoadPeace in it's unrelenting mission to help us be safe

Dave

Aaa, poor love, she's forced to drive a large vehicle, does she have difficulties getting in a smaller one? She's obviously visually impaired as well and needs a larger vehicle to elevate her driving position to see better. Nope, it's not working!!

Agree with others, doctor, solicitor and membership of Cycling Uk(CTC) for future, as will have free insurance and solicitors.

ahhh bullshit...

Silly woman has TWO eyes - it is impossible for BOTH blindspots to covered by the bicycle at any one time. She saw him alright but wasn't actually LOOKING. Nothing but careless driving in this case.

Nbrus again going to the ends of the internet earth to defend a potential killer, sad really.

And Pete, fuck off we're the people's front of Judea!

two points overlooked here;

- every operator of heavy machinery which churns out toxic fumes is a potential killer

- the human perceptual system is not especially well equipped to deal with the conditions

the obvious conclusion is not - lynch the chavvy fat woman, but rather, reduce overall car dependence and change the conditions to make the environment less hostile for human beings.

splitter!

The only way to prevent incidents like these is to have collision avoidance or driver assist systems taking care of the stuff humans have problems with. Why would someone choose to drive into another person?

Or, we could have drivers actually pay attention to their driving and open their flipping eyes.

You're merely telling me that cars are not fit for the roads or humans aren't fit to drive cars. Ban them all? Alternatively, we need to expect higher standards and people need both education to drive better and suitable punishment when they fail...

Yes must agree that this woman is a liability on the roads, please prosecute.

PS - it never ceases to amaze me what a hive of name calling and bigotry rise up on this forum, it took approximatley half a page of comments before the comments went south calling the driver fat. The excuse of 'well you should see what the car forum people say about us' literally sounds like something the 'Judean People's Front' would say.

wow that is the worst set of excuses that I have ever heard come out of a motorists mouth.

1 - Report it to the police - 3 points and £100 fine....driving without due care and attention.  Possibly should result in the driver requiring an eye test  but unlilkely.

2 - If you are insured contact your insurers, if not a claims company - but be prepared to wait 12 months before you receive a payout.

3 - go and see your GP for an assessment on your back to see if it's related to your accident.

on a complete aside..... this is the kind of incident that the governments proposed changes to small claims would make unviable because the cyclist would have to pay costs from their compensation, and as such if they required more than 2 hours of solicitors time they would end up being in a net loss position because any payout likely be in the below £500 bracket in this case due to the fairly minor impact.

I think there is the chance for a really interesting feature here, and here's how I see it working.
Road.cc put together a panel of experts on the subject, then riders send in videos of dangerous near misses and SMIDSY's. The panel say yes/no to legal pursuit and in the case of 'yes's' they provide the victim with support and direction to follow that legal course.
Then the results are presented on here once all is said and done. We can all learn what to do, idiots like this lady are hopefully brought to task...

The human eye has a blind spot near the middle and a bicycle is just small enough to fit in that blind spot, especially if the person isn't expecting to see a bicycle and it isn't moving across their field of vision. It takes longer for the brain to register moving objects in that blind spot and the woman did notice the cyclist just in time to avoid a collision. There's an interesting article on this at the following link...

So this finely tuned driving machine suffered from her only weakness... As she steadily tracked across the roundabout, Terminator-style, the daft cyclist was moving the perfect speed to remain in that blind spot all the way until he hit her car.

Or, just maybe, and I know this is pretty leftfield, but... Perhaps the complacent prick didn't look or scan properly, and is so lacking in self-awareness that she ends up blaming the cyclist for hitting the car?

Your blind spot also missed the bit where the collision left buckled wheels etc. So she didn't 'avoid' a collision.

It's incredible really. She tries to justify the unjustifiable. She shouldn't be on the road.

Oh, and I note her car is a BMW 4x4. Now i'm not saying all BMW drivers or 4x4 owners are aggressive morons, but it does seem that a disproprotionately large number of them are.

She is far too stupid to possess a driving licence. Driving examination should include an IQ test in which case she would definitely have failed.

I have long been an advocate for an IQ element for the driving test.  Doube didgits should be at least the base requirement.

Doctors who work in hospitals or do on call work have higher insurance premiums due to the number of accidents they have.

That probably says more about the conditions and hours medics are forced to work under and how this impacts on their driving, rather than their common sense.
