More assault allegations against Jan Ullrich

Jan Ullrich is reportedly facing another assault allegation following an incident at Hamburg Airport on Tuesday. Germany’s only Tour de France winner was flying to the US to seek new rehabilitation treatment after he was twice arrested for violent incidents last month.

A police spokesman told SID, a subsidiary of AFP, that Ullrich was alleged to have "suddenly assaulted" a 34-year-old man in the security check area.

The alleged victim did not lodge a complaint until a few hours later, by which point Ullrich had already flown to the US.

Ullrich was last month admitted to a psychiatric hospital in Frankfurt after being released on bail following an alleged assault on a prostitute in a five-star hotel.

He is accused of choking her and is under investigation for attempted manslaughter and grievous bodily harm. He was said to have resisted arrest when officers arrived and police said he “was likely under the influence of alcohol and drugs."

Ullrich had returned to Germany to undergo therapy for addiction to alcohol and drugs. He explained that he was “in despair” after separating from his wife and being unable to see three sons.

Earlier that week, he had appeared in court in Mallorca after being arrested for an alleged brawl with his neighbour on the island, the German actor and director Til Schweiger.

Ullrich retired from cycling in 2007. As well as his Tour de France win, he was runner-up five times and also won the gold medal in the road race at the Sydney Olympic Games in 2000 as well as two world time trial championships.

He was twice banned for doping, the first time in 2002 when he tested positive for amphetamines. On that occasion he was handed a minimal six-month suspension since the German federation ruled he had used the drug for recreational purposes rather than to enhance performance.

In 2012, the German's links to Operacion Puerto saw him retroactively banned from August 22 2011, and all results gained since May 2005 removed from his Palmarès. He admitted to blood doping in 2013.

Last September, he was handed a 21 month suspended prison sentence and fined by a Swiss court for drink-driving and speeding.
