Bus driver charged following Oxford Street cyclist's death

Charges laid following fatal accident in April that claimed 25-year-old cyclist's life...

A London bus driver has been charged with causing the death by dangerous driving of a cyclist who suffered fatal injuries when she was struck by his vehicle last April on the capital's busy Oxford Street.

The victim, 25-year-old artist, photographer and designer Jayne Helliwell, died in the Royal London Hospital four hours after being hit by the double decker No. 390 bus operated by Metroline on 14 April.

The vehicle was being driven by 59-year-old Carlton Lewars of Wood Green, who the Evening Standard says has now been charged in connection with the fatal accident and bailed to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court on 15 October.

During the period in which the accident happened, the Tottenham Court Road end of Oxford Street had become what safety campaigners described as a dangerous "slalom" for cyclists, reported the newspaper.

Jayne's friend Amelia Gregory, quoted in the newspaper, said: "I hope, very soon, that we will see safer roads for cyclists and that her life will not have been taken in vain."
