Vitus Pro Cycling rider knocked unconscious as driver crashes into him

""I've been very lucky," says former national hill climb champion Adam Kenway ...

A member of the Vitus Pro Cycling team has spoken of how he was knocked unconscious when a van driver crashed into him on a roundabout.

The incident happened at 6pm last Friday evening in Ilkeston as Adam Kenway, aged 32, commuted home to Belper, Derbyshire from his work at Cycle Republic in Nottingham, reports the Derby Telegraph.

Kenway, who won the national hill climb championship in 2016 just days after another incident in which he was knocked off his bike,  said: "Normally when you're cycling you get a sixth sense of what's going to happen.

"But this chap came around the roundabout and he couldn't have stopped if something was coming.

"It was a shock, it took me by surprise,” he continued. “I went into the air and landed on the floor. I've got bruises on both sides, a black eye, gravel rash and I've split my eyebrow.

"I've been very lucky," Kenway went on. "A couple of people saw the crash and they said they didn’t think I was going to get back up.

"I was in and out of consciousness. It didn't feel like it was me."

Kenway, who was treated at the Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham and sustained concussion as a result of the incident, added: "I don’t want to be scared of the road, so I need to get riding my bike again.

“The best thing to do is just get back on it as soon as I’m able."

Derbyshire Police are continuing with their investigation but have not made any arrest as yet in connection with the incident.

Confirmation that no matter how careful and skilled you are (he's a pro!) there are always drivers bad enough. I hope the van driver is charged and punished (I can hope, can't I?!).

Hoping it's not too long before you're back on the bike Adam and not to difficult for you.
