UCI announces candidates to host 2015 Road World Champs

Oman, Quebec and Richmond to battle it out

The UCI today confirmed that Oman has joined the list of possible venues for the 2015 World Championships, Quebec and Richmond Virginia have already registered their interest in staging the event.

On the face of it the three venues give a comprehensive spread of potential weather conditions with Canada in early October a contrast to Oman. At last year's Road World Championships in Melbourne the UCI decided to only accept bids from candidates outside of Europe for 2015 "In order to acknowledge the increasing interest of non-European countries in organising the Championships."

A decision on which of the three will host the championships will be made in September in the meantime the "three candidatures will now be examined during the evaluation stage", which no doubt will involve a fair bit of long distance travel and trying out of the various facilities… wonder if the ultra-deluxe Shangri La hotel in Oman will get a look in?

Or to look at it another way, by 2015 there may be a spread of more representative and open governments throughout the region. They might even be more stable by then.

Whether those governments would want lycra on the streets is a different matter and that does make choosing Oman a higher risk choice than the others.

Oman? Do you think there'll be much of the Middle East left by 2015? Or even by the end of this week the way things are going 2 Seriously though, the Sultan is an old guy, he's in good health now, but if the time comes for a change of leadership it's not for sure that the next ruler would be so well disposed to men and women in Lycra shorts parading on his corniche.
