Gilbert stays top of UCI WorldTour rankings as Contador moves to second

Great Britain remain in tenth place as Spain takes first place in national standings

Omega Pharma-Lotto’s Philippe Gilbert remains at the top of the UCI WorldTour Rankings, but his lead has been cut to just seven points following the Giro d’Italia, a race that the Classics specialist did not compete in. The overall winner in Italy, Saxo Bank SunGard’s Alberto Contador, moves up to second with Michele Scarponi of Lampre-ISD a point behind in third place.

With Spanish riders winning six Giro stages and Italian ones five stages, together with points awarded for minor placings and in the general classification, those countries leapfrog Belgium at the top of the national standings.

Great Britain remains in tenth place, gaining points thanks to the performance of Mark Cavendish and David Millar in the Giro, but with the Tour of California and Bayern Rundfahrt not counting towards the ranking, there’s no benefit from the efforts of Team Sky’s Ben Swift, Bradley Wiggins and Geraint Thomas in those races.

HTC-Highroad remain top of the team rankings, with Contador’s showing in the Giro boosting Saxo Bank-SunGard from tenth to second, replacing Leopard Trek who fall one place to third. Team Sky drop from eighth to eleventh.

It's funny how Italy and Spain are the top two of the nationalities league table. I am sure there is no correlation between this fact and the number of doping investigations/implicated riders from said countries. Is Rigoberto Uran Uran related to Simon le Bon?

I bet Gilbert drinks beetroot juice every morning. You can mock, but I'm tellin' ya, it works! 26
