We’ve featured buses regularly in our Near Miss of the Day series over the years – they account for around 1 in 20 of the videos published here – and we have another today, as a bus driver in Coventry starts turning left as they are overtaking a cyclist, forcing the rider, who is banging on the vehicle, to jump onto the pavement to avoid being run over.
James, the road.cc reader who sent in the clip, said: “I’m cycling up Cox Street in Coventry to the junction with Jordan Well and Gosford Street when the bus driver thinks it would be good to overtake me and immediately turn left forcing me onto the footway to avoid being run over (I’d say avoid a collision but since I've been thumping on the side of the bus I'd say there's already been a collision).
“I reported this to West Midlands Police and National Express as per usual I have heard nothing from National Express (any enquiry will simply get a ‘protecting the privacy of the bus driver’ type response).
“National Express were obviously reluctant but I did eventually get the video from the bus.”
He added: “Not my first incident, or my last – there's more to come, with National Express another candidate for close pass of the day here.”
Over the years road.cc has reported on literally hundreds of close passes and near misses involving badly driven vehicles from every corner of the country – so many, in fact, that we’ve decided to turn the phenomenon into a regular feature on the site. I very rarely post here but this is one of the worst encounters I have ever seen. It is deliberate. The bus driver. Did. Not. Care. I have an air horn and after using it during that altercation I would have followed him till he stopped for a talking to.
That looks deliberate, especially given the acceleration of the bus as shown in the rear view camera. Would it be possible to sue National Express for assault? Could it be reported to the police as an assault rather than a driving offence for which we all all know the police would rather do fuck all with it.
I bet the bus driver forgot the cyclist was there before completing the overtake. God dam numpty.
And fuck his privacy. The company should post pictures of his penis his name and address. At least to the police. We all know where the Queen lives, but I'd much rather know where these sorts of people live.
They consider cyclist as if they are stationary, so once ahead they pull in they do not consider that the cyclist is still progressing along the road, so the vehicle needs to be fully past before pulling in.
drivers of HGVs should be trainied to understand the difference, as the length of the vehicle makes this crucial.

A very good point which is similar to one I have made about still images extracted from my videos and presented to Lancashire Constabulary in a .pdf evidence file. The problem is that the file is viewed by inept unsympathetic policemen who have no idea about cycling or looking at images. They look at the picture and all they see is the space between the nearside of the vehicle passing the cyclist and the kerb. The primitive neural centre slowly clunks into action and is unable to process the notion that both the vehicle and the camera are moving: I could easily get a bike through there, what's he complaining about?
NX Buses are often reluctant to answer complaints and never reveal what action they take, citing privacy. However I know someone (now retired) who worked for them and he told me they do sack drivers who endanger cyclists. In the case of the close pass I think retraining would be more appropriate, but the left hook should require drastic action, because left hooks at low speed risk a cyclist being dragged under the wheel and are potentially fatal.
What action did WMP take? They are usually pretty strong on taking action in these cases.

Should be reported as an assault. There's no way that isn't deliberate.

So more of "once my front wheel is past yours you need to brake or else..." shenanigans.
