Road rage driver assaults teenage cyclist after clipping him with wing mirror

The enraged motorist allegedly dragged the teenager from his bike and threw him to the ground, before tossing the bike into a ditch

Police are appealing for witnesses after a teenage cyclist was allegedly assaulted and left bruised by an enraged driver who confronted the boy after clipping him with his wing mirror on a narrow country lane.

According to EssexLive, the incident occurred on Saturday 10 September, between 12.15pm and 1pm, on the Starling’s Green road near Clavering, Essex.

As the teenager was riding his bike on the narrow road, he was struck by a motorist’s wing mirror. After hitting the cyclist, the driver – a man reported to be in his 50s – turned his Mercedes around and confronted the youngster.

The motorist then dragged him from his bike and threw him to the ground, before tossing the bike into a nearby ditch and driving away. The teenager allegedly suffered bruising in the apparent road rage-induced assault.

The suspect has been described as a clean-shaven man in his late 50s with a stocky build and grey hair. He was wearing a neck chain, blue shirt and blue jogging bottoms at the time of the incident.

> Road rage motorist assaults cyclist and steals his camera after accusing him of ‘not riding in the bike lane’

Last month, we reported that a 65-year-old cyclist was left with a dislocated shoulder and compound fracture to his arm after being assaulted by a motorist, who turned on the cyclist while arguing with another driver about a minor car crash in Derby.

Glenn Holland, a former army medic, claims that as he approached the scene of the incident, one of the motorists involved in the collision accused him of cycling on the road instead of the bike path.

He says the driver then pushed him to the ground, before stealing the camera attached to his bike.

After boarding a wrong bus at the world championships and ruining a good pair of jeans at the cyclocross, he now serves as road.cc’s senior news writer. Before his foray into cycling journalism, he wallowed in the equally pitiless world of academia, where he wrote a book about Victorian politics and droned on about cycling and bikes to classes of bored students (while taking every chance he could get to talk about cycling in print or on the radio). He can be found riding his bike very slowly around the narrow, scenic country lanes of Co. Down.

It's so disappointing that at the point in my life where I can afford a Mercedes, easy finance has made them the car of choice of boy racers and thugs.

Big man.

A driver causes a collision by driving too close to a cyclist and then blames the cyclist and assaults him. Some people are nuts. I hope the victim is ok.

They should legalise tasers for cyclists only.

Well, it so often seems to be MAMICs (Middle-aged men in cars).  So maybe just make all males over 40 use bikes instead?  Their kids - if they have - should be at an age where they can ride bikes too so that fixes one need for driving.

They can use the safe and convenient cycle infra to get to their destinations - or to public transport, to connect with their pre-stored / rental bike at the end of that leg.

What do you mean, impossible?

This appalling incident, involving an attack on a youth by a nutter, seems to warrant more than the usual half-hearted response by the police where they probably wrote down the final report of 'insufficient evidence' even before issuing the PR stunt 'appeal for witnesses'. Let's hope I'm wrong (Essex police seem, from what I've read on here, to be devoted to the low and cyclist-phobic standard set by Lancashire) and they're even now working away looking for old Mercs caught on camera nearby. Mercedes drivers, while not quite attaining the level of disregard for the law exhibited by BMW, Audi and VW drivers, are pretty bad aroung Garstang (which is Nuremberg am Wyre territory full of crazed Brexit voters tearing around in large German tanks), aided by the Permanent Nelsonian-eyed police, except when they're blocking the main road in their determination to park as close as possible to the school. You can see that the driver of the KS19 BZM uber-Panzer saw no need to bother with the over-bureacratic nonsense of the MOT designed for the unter-mensch

But wingnuts didn't?  Well, maybe on non-folding bikes.

If you have to ask you don't want!  Chromed steel at about 30g each but alloy or zinc maybe lighter (solid axle too mind).  But who cares?  It's the "old-style quick-release" vibe.  Check Pashley's!

Curious (and not judgemental); do you feel the same way about "dashboard"?

I use VED for "road tax".

V5C for "logbook".

Dropdown for "glovebox".

and

dampers for "shock absorbers".

I keep gloves in the glove compartment.  They sit atop the logbook.

Surprised you don't go for "instrument panel" ...

I don't get what a menu has to do with a glovebox.

Wing mirrors, door mirrors. No difference- everyone knows what's being talked about.

Much like road tax then.

Mirrors fixed to doors and wings are not the same.

Not at all... There is no difference being hit by a tonne plus of moving metal with a mirror mounted to its wing or door...

Those that use the term 'Road Tax' imply that they are paying for the roads and others aren't. Their ignorance is two-fold and suggests thier sense of entitlement. Your pedantry is pointless...

I reckon more people could identify a "wing" mirror than could identify a wing.

Don't get me started on the difference between wings (the horizontal type) and spoilers.
