Cycling App of the Week: Relive

Create a quality visual map of your rides with Relive, our Cycling App of the Week

What is it?

Relive captures your ride data from Strava or Garmin Connect and transforms it into a stunning moving map. Any ride of 10km or more for a duration of 12 hours or less can be uploaded - after your ride has been shared to Strava or Garmin Connect, Relive sends you an email with a link to your video. At the moment it's just these two platforms that are compatible ("more are coming" according to Relive), and if you connect both it gives priority to the Strava file so you don't have to worry about duplicate videos.

The moving map gives you lots of info along the way. Your top speed shows at the point you hit it along the route, points of interest are included and if you've added photos to your Strava file these will pop up along the route too - though you need to add these into your Strava file within 15mins of it being uploaded, and Relive will show a maximum of ten.

The idea for Relive was conceived by some Dutch cycling enthusiasts during a cycling holiday in Tenerife, who wanted a better way to capture the memories of their epic ride. The mobile app was launched in early 2017, and they now boast over  500,000 users worldwide.

At the moment, Relive can't actually 'relive', in the sense that you can't retrospectively make videos from old rides before you signed up for the app - however they say they are looking into it.

What makes it unique?

While there are numerous apps out there that record your activitiy in map form post-ride, there's nothing we've seen that looks this visually interesting and realistic. It's literally like a live graphic from TV cycling coverage brought to life for your own personal rides.

You can add photos taken during your ride that show up along the route from where they where taken, plus ride stats appear at the end of the video

How can it help me?

It goes without saying that Relive isn’t a performance tool, but it provides a fun and inspiring memento of rides you're particularly proud of and can be shared with friends quickly and easily. if you really want to bring some pals out on your favourite new route, showing them the details of the ride could do a fine job of persuading them (or potentially dissuade, if it's very tough). It's also a far better visual representation than a flat birds-eye map that you get when uploading to Strava, Garmin etc - perhaps the promise of seeing an epic ride in all its glory could provide users with the motivation to get out and ride more!

Where can I get it?
Relive is available on both Android and iOS, and is completely free.

Jack has been hooked on cycling since his student days, and currently has a Trek 1.2 for winter riding, a beloved Bickerton folding bike for getting around town and an extra beloved custom Ridley Helium SLX for fantasising about going fast in his stable. I am signed up to this but tbh dont look at it anymore, once you've seen one terrain map youve seen them all.

I'd prefer it if they connected it to google streetview and generated a video of that

You might like this then. http://gpxhyperlapse.com/ lets you upload a fox file and it makes a street view video. It's a bit patchy sometimes but generally works.

Paul-ldn, as it's a tag-on to Strava, you've always got a Strava map to follow if you want to re-ride it (or copy a friend's ride).

I don't think it's meant to be a do-everything super training tool, it's a harmless piece of fluff that condenses your day riding into 60 seconds of max-heartrate, max-speed and your photos.  If you like a geeky tv-route-preview-style graphical representation of what you've just completed then you'll love it (I do) if not then you probably won't.  To echo siimonb's point, it is a bit quick, I tend to ride 25-50miles at a time and the video is always 57 seconds long and it does sometimes require a couple of viewings.  I don't know if longer rides are shown over a greater length, if an 8-hour ride was condensed to the same timeframe it would be ridiculous.

I'd only find this app useful if I could see a map I could follow and perhaps copy rather than a pointless satellite terrain I don't recognise.

In it's current form it's just an ego trip with no practical purpose for the recipient than bragging rights. a tech version of the Christmas Round Robin.

Can always count on someone here to shit on new ideas and say they're useless. Personally I think this is really clever and as it doesn't have the map function you're after why don't you get in touch with them and suggest it?

Great app, this – I've been using it for a few months and love it. Brilliant for having a post-ride squiz at what you did, and perfect for showing yer mum/colleagues/partner what it is you get up to.

It is a good addtion to the Strava post ride analysis for sure - The only downer is the speed of the tracker on the replay - its too fast!  I emailed them a while back and they did say they would be looking into it but nothing so far from what I can see

That's awesome. I've just done my local 22 miler (heatstroke anyone ?) and it looks really cool, like something off the telly.
