We like a good app here at road.cc (here are 13 of them) and news reaches us from Xert and its new Segment Hunter, which has been designed to help you pace yourself on a segment to get that coveted KOM or QOM trophy. It can be equally used for time trials or other courses.
Pacing yourself on a ride is a tricky business, and especially difficult if you’re aiming to complete a segment or course in a faster time than you’ve managed before. You need to meter out your effort so you don’t burn out before the finish, and have something left in the tank for a fast finish.
Xert’s new app aims to remove the guesswork and act as a sort of virtual director sportif issuing instructions in your ear. Using its own advanced algorithms the app uses live power output and known rider fitness to help you pace your ride by advising on a target power to ride at.
“This new app showcases another use of Xert’s advanced analytics: to hunt for segments or pace a time trial. By modelling a rider’s fatigue in real-time, we can adjust their power targets on-the-fly to help them deliver their best performance,” says Xert’s Founder, Armando Mastracci. “
This is a totally new way to have fun with segments, and we’re also seeing our early adopters use it to pace themselves through time-trials.”
The new Xert Segment Hunter app is compatible with Garmin Edge devices from the new 130 to the top-end 1030, as well as Fenix watches, and available through the Garmin IQ Store. It runs as a data field so you can easily configure the app to display where-ever you want on the computer screen.
When you begin riding a flagged segment the app will provide power targets on a colour-coded background so it’s easy to view at pace. This power target is adjusted in real-time to help you pace yourself with the aim of improving your time on a particular segment or route.
It all sounds pretty interesting and promising so we’re going to download it and try it out for ourselves. If you give it a go do let us know how you get on, we’d be very interested if it works for you.

Remarkably, I've managed to do the same with a £4.99 Aldi computer and Strava on my phone.
Length of segment: known.
Average speed required to beat my last time: faster than my last time.
Average speed to beat the KOM: faster than the KOM holders average speed.
Not hard...but not an APP so...
If it's anything like their superb 'What's My FTP?' app it should be a solid bit of software.
