to go 105 5800 or Ultegra 6800. is ultegra worth the extra £300 ???

Both my bikes run 105 (5800) and the difference in the performance between the two was huge. The newer of the two group sets shifted like a dog whist the older set was light as a feather. If you were blind tested you'd think they were different groupsets.

The only difference between the two was that i was using 2 year old jagwire cable outers on the new groupset whilst the older set was set up with brand new cable outers.

THIS.

Swap out your cables every 1-2000km. It's £10 worth of hardwear* and 20 minutes, max. for a vastly improved experience.

* a lot less if you buy in bulk.

Are you just referring to swapping the inners though? Swapping the outers necessitates new bar tape and the time to fit, surely?

Have unwrapped and re-wrapped my bartape quite a few times (Brooks leather) - not a problem. If you were going down past the hoods and re-doing the drops/bung, yes that would be nasty.

I swapped from Tiagra 4600 (10-speed) to Ultegra 6800 early in the year and the difference is very noticeable - in particular the front shifting and brakes. However I got the groupset for an absolute song and if i'd had to pay retail for it, i'm not sure i'd have done so.

If 105 5800 had been around at the time and I had to pay retail (especially at the 300-odd quid that Merlin keep getting them in for) i'd have gone for 105 over Ultegra every single time (Just my feeling obviously). Most of the major mechanical changes seem to have trickled down from 6800 to 5800 so I wouldn have thought you'd be getting a fair chunk of the benefits. Personally i'd go with the others and say spend the cash on wheels if you have it spare - perhaps a nice pair of hand-builts.

Hi, just in my humble opinion.
Have ridden both kits very recently, both the same age (roughly) and same gearing and I and the owners of the bikes could not tell the difference when riding - zilch. There may be differences in a few ounces but I agree with the above post that your £300 would be better in wheel choice.
Kit 'gurus' may get a little more moist on the Ultegra over 105 but for general cyclists the differences are not night and day.

A friend reckons the brakes are the biggest thing he notices jumping from 105 to Ultegra, unless of course these have trickled down to the latest 105

Putting the extra £300 towards wheels would probably be better.
