SRAM Groupset mixing

Hey folks,

My SRAM rival Rear shifter has died (by which I mean the lever has sheared) and is way out of warranty. So I've looked about and found some RED shifters going cheap on eBay, so will this work with my Rival rear mech, or is it best to stick with the same groupset?? Both are ten speed, so ratios are not an issue I think.

Cheers in advance

Nah, I meant the cable pull ratios....cassette ratios are inependant of shifter/derailluer compatibility

Oh, the little metal part breaking on shifters from a few years ago seems to be a bit of a known problem so you might have been able to beg SRAM for an out of warranty replacement but that doesn't sound like your issue.

Totally agree, I traded down as functionally Apex/Rival/Force seem to be exactly the same and as I kept breaking them I thought I'd save some cash and add only 50g or whatever it is to my winter bike.

It's actually the top of the shift lever, where it engages the mechanism. I had a look and couldn't see how to change one.

And the reason for going cheap is budget, I can't yet splurge on more expensive components to replace them

On the newer stuff the pivot is held in place by a circlip, not a sleeve but the rst is the same:

By the way, what is that has broken? I'm guessing it's not the lever itself but the small metal part inside?

I've used Rival, Force and now Apex shifters with the same Rival groupset so it's fine to mix and match the "normal" 10 speed stuff.

Make sure you don't get the newer yaw Red shifters as they don't have the trim settings the others do.

I've been using a Rival/Force mix for 3 years or so with no problems whatsoever, there will be no compatability issues. Just remember buying cheap may be a costly option. The likes of Chain reaction, wiggle, Evans, merlin cycles etc may have some "new" old stock all of which would have the bonus of a warrantee.

As long as ratios are the same and the same speed, it will work perfectly.

I dont know what you mean by ratios but as you can put any 10 speed shifters with any 10 speed mech (front or rear). The only time ratios (by that I assume you mean size of largest sprocket) is a factor is in determining if you need a long or short cage rear mech. Since you are only changing shifters then this is not a consideration.
You do know that you can get spares and the replacement of the internals is not that difficult do you?
