had a similar problem - turned out to be a lose spoke
Try oiling the spoke nipples, where they sit in the rims and where the spokes cross over.
Spokes moving against each other where they cross?
I don't think so, I can't replicate the noise without sitting on the bike, weight has something to do with it.
Check there's nothing hiding inside the rim. I had a weird rattle from my back wheel about a month ago and it turned out to be road salt that had recrystallised inside the rim and was rolling about as the wheel went round, shook it out and the noise went away
valves not likely as this problem has just arisen, I am thinking some of the spokes feel slightly looser than the others.
Loose, maybe even broken spoke?
Valves rattling against the rim? I had that for AGES and thought I was going to have a catastrophic wheel failure at any corner!
Checked the hub, all is in perfect working order, I think the tension may be low on the spokes. I just hope the rim hasnt gone!
hmm, possibly the bearings? first thing i'd do would be strip down and regrease the hub, if the bearings are cartidge units then check them for play/roughness and replace them if they're broke
