Two cyclists were killed last night when they were struck by a car that was involved in a police incident in Berkshire.
Thames Valley Police had been called to a "fear-of-welfare" incident at around 9pm in Purley on Thames last night when they saw a black BMW convertible that was related to the call.
The vehicle hit the bike riders, both of whom died at the scene.
Police subsequently arrested the driver of the vehicle, who had been injured in the incident and taken to the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading.
It is not clear whether police were in pursuit of the BMW, but Thames Valley Police says it has referred the incident to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
According to a spokesman for the force, specialist officers were providing support to the victims' next of kin.
Purley Rise, the road in the flood-affected village where the incident took place, was closed overnight while police carried out their investigation of the scene.
Police have asked anyone who saw the incident, or noticed the BMW beforehand, to contact them on 101.
