Surrey road race hit by drawing pin attack

“Lucky nobody was killed” says organiser

Not content with getting up petitions and NIMBYish lobbying of the county council, anti-cycling forces in Surrey have stepped up their campaign with a drawing pin attack on a road race last weekend.

Competitors in the Redhill Cycle Club road race on Saturday June 28 sustained punctures after riding over drawing pins scattered on the road near Newdigate.

Fortunately nobody was injured, but organiser Adrian Webb told Get Surrey that the culprits were “lucky nobody was killed”.

“This was very serious and hugely dangerous,” he said. “I don’t think the people who did this, probably thinking they were having a laugh, actually thought through the harm that they could have caused.

“If you have someone go over those pins at 20 or 25mph in a peloton of 60 cyclists and they come off the bike, the injuries could be serious or even fatal.

“I couldn’t believe it when it happened. There were riders just walking their bikes with pins through the wheels.”

Surrey’s popularity as a cycling destination has inspired vociferous opposition from what appears to be a handful of residents in recent years.

Last year, local businessman Ian Huggins launched a petition calling on the council to "Stop using Surrey as a Cycle Track."

Earlier this year, Brave Events, organisers of two multi-sport events in the area, decided to wind up their business rather than continue to try and run their races after accusing Surrey County Council of reneging on a deal to allow the 2014 edition of the Vachery Triathlon to use the same course as the previous year.

However, there is no reason to believe those involved with petitions and lobbying are connected to this attack.

Mr Webb said: “I think people need to move away from this dangerous mindset that they need to save those few seconds on the road by dangerously overtaking a cyclist. We share the roads and cyclists are more vulnerable. You keep hearing the argument that cyclists hold up traffic. The simple fact is that cyclists are traffic just as much as cars are.

“There needs to be less opposition and more working together. We have been a cycling club since the 1950s. This is not a new thing. Yes there is an increase, but communication and respect are important.”

A Surrey Police spokesman said: “Surrey Police is dedicated to keeping the roads of Surrey safe for all users and regularly patrols routes which are popular with cyclists.

“Officers actively encourage people to report any suspicious activity to them and work closely with local partners as part of the Cycle Smart scheme.

“Deliberately putting items on the road which can cause damage to bikes and other vehicles is not only a criminal offence which offenders will be prosecuted for if they are caught but this behaviour can also have serious, possibly life threatening consequences.

“Surrey Police will not tolerate this kind of behaviour and anyone with information on who is responsible for such offences is urged to contact Surrey Police on 101.

“Information can be passed anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."

Don't forget the impatient motorist who hospitalised the lead rider in a vets race last week as they just could not be arsed to wait.

i like how.. nothing happened but "everyone could have died!"

when i wake up in the morning i could die too.
when i commute here, over the pond, i ride on glass, pins, even razor blades sometimes. None of these ever even endangered me 20mph. The tires dont explode or something. Its just annoying.

I'm tired of sensationalistic WHAT IF when theres like 5% chance you fall and and even lower chance you actually die or something. Heck, the US is supposed to be leading this stupid category, not the UK.

Don't forget, think of the children!

@muffles: so speaks a man(?) who's never been in a bunch pile up.

Death might be unlikely but broken bones / hospitalisation not at all unlikely.

Seriously. You ride over that kind of stuff. Why would you? I do my damnedest to avoid that kind of crap. Once had a blow out on a hill. Caught a flint. One minute rolling smoothly. Next pssst and then the front wheel vibrating violently as the rim tries to saw through rubber. Took every once of skill and concentration to come to a halt without dropping the bike. Also one of the local crits a few years back had a huge pile up when a rider slid on a patch of diesel/oil. He brought down about 10 others with him. Road rash, torn lycra and one rider with a stuffed collar bone. This incident in Surrey isn't health and safety gone mad. It's about the fact that some individuals have attempted to damage other peoples property and technically blocked the highway. Which is a criminal offense here in the UK. IF and it is a big IF they catch these individuals they might even be charged with criminal damage of the riders bikes as well as blocking the highway. Though it is highly unlikely as in other cases the culprit has got off scot free.

Not bloody road tacks again.

I think this was the Newdigate circuit where the police interfered. I have heard rumblings of discontent about that circuit full stop.

There are people out there who are deliberately stirring up hatred on the roads. The other week on the club run, my son (14) was on the front of the group and an oncoming car - who we weren't impeding at all - threw a bottle which hit him. Luckily he's not easily rattled as we were in close formation at around 25mph at the time. I'm sure whoever did it thinks they're very clever.

Really? I have been riding around Surrey for 15 years and I don't ever recall seeing a policeman "patrolling" routes.

this is unbelievable - what a bunch of stupid tw@ts - can you imagine them in their chintzy front rooms over a cherry hatching this plan - bet they were cheap tacks from the pound shop...

I live down on the south coast and in my local paper is someone putting wire across paths between trees at head/neck height...

you could not make this up...

but I guess it is just the punishment passing motorist out his/her car...

makes me very angry

I take it the same pinheads will be taking actions against 4x4 drivers for the damage they do to the roads?

4 x 4 = potholes

Is it just me or do you sometimes wonder why there is a queue of cars behind you. When i'm driving yes there are times when you can't overtake but I think generally people think they need more room that is actually necessary. You see cars pulling out wildly and its just not needed. just slow down and pass with a respectful distance, its not difficult. Proves my theory, cyclists make better drivers.

Obviously anyone driving an overtly wide X5 or X6 is a dick anyway and has no driving skills or confidence, hence the need to sit in your cock-shell.

Most folk don't have a scooby how to overtake properly, quickly or safely. They haven't any idea what their car is capable of either. How often do we get passed by motors barely outdragging us, doing the '30mph in top gear rattle' just before the double-whites?

(every chuffin' weekend...)

Ah, you must be that Surrey C@nt! Why take one person(s) ignorance and add to it? I cycle all over Surrey & also drive an X5. I do it (drive) safely and it isn't for my ego (or appendage)
I have almost been wiped out by people and abused for cycling two abreast in the middle of nowhere, on a wide empty road by a self proclaimed 'cyclist'!! The only thing that unites these people is their ignorance , lack of awareness and anger management; not their car type.
There are arseholes on foot, bikes, in cars & lorries etc.
They are linked by their lack of ability to co-habit with society, not their mode of transport.
It's a lazy argument and any valid points suffer accordingly!

Is this the same circuit on which a Surrey League road race was halted by the police in 2012?

I'm guessing the police attended in response to a complaint from someone?

"if they are caught" which they very rarely, if ever are. So it'll keep happening, 3 years of similar action in the New Forest now, not a single person's been done for anything.
