Giro d'Italia Stage 9: Simon Yates wins to extend lead, Chris Froome fades

Mitchelton-Scott rider puts more time into rivals ahead of second rest day

Simon Yates of MItchelton-Scott has extended his lead at the Giro d'Italia after winning the Stage 9 summit finish on the Gran Sasso.

Lancashire rider Yates, whose teammate Esteban Chavez leapfrogs defending champion Tom Dumoulin of Team Sunweb to move second overall  after finishing the stage in third place, now leads the race by 32 seconds.

Dumoulin finished the stage in eighth place, 12 seconds behind Yates, and now lies 38 seconds behind the Briton on the General Classification.

it was another challenging day for Team Sky's Chris Froome, who together with UAE Team Emirates rider Fabio Aru lost contact with their main rivals on the tough final section of the climb to the summit, each losing more than a minute.

Speaking after the 225km stage from Pesco Sannita, Yates said: “I realise how big it is to win my first stage with the Maglia Rosa.

"That one is for the boys who rode at the front all day. It's really nice.

"Since the beginning of the day we believed in the possibility of winning the stage as well as defending the Maglia Rosa.”

Difficult for normal sized people to compete against the climbing runts unless in top form.

The writing on this site has been appalling lately, is your editor on holiday or something?

CK is absolute garbage, actually had correspondance with him in the past about an irresponsible thing he said on tv, that he not only had no proof of but damaging to cycling as a whole. Whilst he acknowledged that I was in fact correct and it wasn't his place to be making unquantified bollox statements on TV he wasn't going to say on air he was full of shit previously.

I didn't complain to OFCOM, pointless because they are gutless agenda driven twats, he just spoils the whole thing with his inane mistake ridden crap, worst commentator in sport currently.

Froome not looking great this year. Must be his new inhaler prescription.

Interesting race so far though.

He looks proper Bolloxed, 'twas most amusing to listen to Carlton Kirby wittering on about how cool Froome was yesterday and that he was not really shagged after the stage, that he was nodding and smiling in that knowing way that only Carlton knows that demonstrates that Froome Chris isn't really fucked it's just one of the many games that he plays, that his time was yet to come. All this as he was going backwards today. I will be as surprised as anyone (except Carlton) if he makes a dramatic comeback.

Well done to Simon Philip Yates.
