A sector of cobbles that features in Paris-Roubaix is to be renamed after Michael Goolaerts, the 23-year-old rider who lost his life there during the race in April.
Verandas Willems-Crelans rider, Goolaerts, was airlifted to hospital in Lille following a crash on the second of the 29 sectors of pavé used in the 257-kilometre race.
He passed away later that night with an autopsy later revealing that he had suffered cardiac arrest before the crash.
Belgium’s Radio 2 reports that the 3km long Viesly to Briastre three-star-rated stretch of cobbles will be officially named ‘Secteur Pavé Michael Goolaerts’ during a June 10 ceremony to which his family has been invited.
In addition to this, the organisers of the Fleche de Heist, a semi-professional Belgian race that will take place on June 2, have decided to rename their event "Fleche de Heist – Michael Goolaerts".
The event finishes in Heist-op-den-Berg, near Antwerp, where Goolaerts lived.
