Now and again in our Near Miss of the Day series, it’s not the cyclist filming the footage who is subjected to a close pass or other piece of poor driving, but another rider up the road and that’s the case today as a motorist swerves at the last moment to avoid hitting a cyclist waiting to turn right.
It was filmed in Bournemouth by road.cc reader Dave, who told us: “I think they gave me space but failed to see the other cyclist.”
At the end of the video, Dave added another incident where a driver overtook him at a pinch point caused by a pedestrian island – something we see all too often in submissions to this feature.
Dave said: “The blue Peugeot crashed into the pedestrian island trying to overtake me. And yes, we did literally both reach a red light ten seconds later anyway. you can hear the wheel making a crunch noise.”
> Near Miss of the Day turns 100 - Why do we do the feature and what have we learnt from it?
Over the years road.cc has reported on literally hundreds of close passes and near misses involving badly driven vehicles from every corner of the country – so many, in fact, that we’ve decided to turn the phenomenon into a regular feature on the site. One day hopefully we will run out of close passes and near misses to report on, but until that happy day arrives, Near Miss of the Day will keep rolling on.
If you’ve caught on camera a close encounter of the uncomfortable kind with another road user that you’d like to share with the wider cycling community please send it to us at info [at] road.cc or send us a message via the road.cc Facebook page.
If the video is on YouTube, please send us a link, if not we can add any footage you supply to our YouTube channel as an unlisted video (so it won't show up on searches).
Please also let us know whether you contacted the police and if so what their reaction was, as well as the reaction of the vehicle operator if it was a bus, lorry or van with company markings etc.

no i dont report to the police any more. I simply cant be arsed. Nothing happens. If people do anything dangerous or annoying i put their plate on rate driver and leave it at that. The guy in the focus who hooted at me on the dual carrigeway already had 26000 people watching him on one you tube channel, the two other major ones might use it too. Having his passengers face and his own numberplate viewed by so many people is more likely than not going to make him think twice before abusing people on the road, so many people have cameras, its not worth it. Put it this way, i was going 30 mph beside a shared path with people walking on it, guy blocks me in at red light, gets out his car threatening to smash my head in, i calm it down telling him'' why are you so angry?'' he bleats on about the cycle path, pushes me off the bike into oncoming traffic. I sent that to the police with a statement, and nothing. Zilch heard back. So rate driver and you tube it is. I'm making a compilation tomorow morning of awful cycle paths i have found here if anyone wants to laugh at them.

Not just me then. I've had a few overtakes whilst indicating to turn right.
This is typical driving for this area. I have hours of similar incidents from my commutes, and just simply don't have the time to upload and pursue on the Dorset Police operation snap website. It is an everyday occurence to have a near miss. On occasions where the local paper reports cyclist incidents (there were two serious incidents in the same month at the same location where cars had to be lifted off cyclists on a roundabout) the comments section is full of abuse blaming the cyclists.
To balance things out a bit,Bournemouth and Christchurch are "London" if you know what I mean.I find in my part of Dorset (Dorchester and further west)we mainly get between OK treatment and almost over-courteous treatment,Lucky I 'spose compared to the rest of the country
Absolutely this. Go west of Wareham and north of wimborne/ringwood and the driving standard increases dramatically. I've not cycled furth east than Southampton yet, but not found where it improves eastward in the new forest.
Very true, l cycle around Bournemouth a lot and it's almost every day that I have a near miss!
Dave doesn't say whether he's reported these utterly incompetent drivers to the police. If he hasn't, he should, before they kill someone.
Absolutely normal every day driving in Bournemouth/Christchurch. We are not even 2nd class citizens here. We are simply scum to be treated as such at all times
Standard Dorset drivers
