This evening's Urban Hill Climb in North London cancelled at eleventh hour

Organisers Rollapaluza cite safety concerns over unspecified "road conditions"...

Rollapaluza have announced that this evening's Urban Hill Climb, due to have been the fourth edition of the closed-road event on Swain's Lane in Highgate, North London, has been cancelled on safety grounds, citing safety fears over unspecified "road conditions." It is hoped to restage the event later this year.

In a statement published on the event website, Rollapaluza said:

It is with regret that we have cancelled / postponed the 2013 Urban Hill Climb due to reasons beyond our control.

As event organisers we feel we have a responsibility not only to provide great events, but also to ensure the safety of all participants and the general public.  With the road conditions as they are this evening we cannot guarantee a safe event.

We apologise to all those who were coming and thank you for your support of the event, we will look into the possibility of a date later in the year after consultation with all event partners.

Since the first edition in 2010, the event has proved popular with riders, fans and locals alike, with this video from 2011 showing some of the action that will now sadly be missing this evening.

I know someone involved with it, and they said that the council forgot to close the road.

I live just down the road and climbed it a couple of times this morning in anticipation of tonight. Didn't notice anything out of the ordinary and was expecting to go and watch this evening until I saw it was cancelled. Mate actually missed announcement and went there this evening and couldn't figure out why cancelled (though he didn't ride up the hill).

Brave decision from a responsible organiser. Safety has to come first. Let's hope they manage to get it run later in the year. Nocturne Hill Climb, anyone??

Damned shame. Rollapaluza put a huge amount into organising this and its always massively oversubscribed. *sad face*
