Kev gets Cycle Show stand for Zero Emissions Expedition

And James Bowthorpe’s bike will feature

Before Kevin Shannon sets off on his Zero Emissions Expedition to circumnavigate the globe by bicycle and boat he has a few stops to make. And the first is at the Cycle Show 2009 next weekend.

You might remember that we featured Kevin on road.cc last month, when he was originally going to be setting off on his expedition but was delayed due to a film production company having expressed an interest in doing a documentary on it.

Kevin said: “The Cycle Show have very kindly donated me a stand which is great. I'll be at the show from Thursday, October 8 for the trade and press day, straight through to Sunday, October 11. My stand is D33a.

“And round the world record holder James Bowthorpe's bike will also be on the stand on the 8th, 10th and 11th.”

Kevin, 23, lives in Mobberley in Cheshire and he will also be aiming to raise £1 million for the ex-servicemen charity Combat Stress on his adventure of a lifetime.

He will be cycling approximately 36,000 miles across five continents and sailing across two oceans, and arriving back around three years later.

During this time he will face extreme sub zero temperatures, scorching heat, thirst, hunger and physical and mental exhaustion, and he hopes to meet, interact and immerse himself in different cultures from every corner of the globe.

“My route will take me from the UK, through western Europe, eastern Europe and into Russia and across to Siberia, then through Mongolia crossing the Gobi Desert and into China and Southeast Asia, and then crossing over to Australia. Then I will travel to South America where I will head north following the west coast until I enter the US. From there I plan to head towards the east coast of Canada, heading across the US, and then back to England.”

Kevin was hoping to be on the road this side of Christmas, and when asked if he had an exact date for leaving he said: “Not yet - something is in the pipeline though.”
We’ll keep you posted.

Kevin is looking for a corporate sponsor to help with the costs of the expedition and enquiries for people interested in providing backing, or anyone who just wants to make a donation, can be made through his website http://www.justgiving.com/becauseitisthere. He is also on Twitter as @vuvu1986.

The Cycle Show 2009 takes place from 9-11 October and is open from 10am-6pm on the Friday and Saturday, and from 10am-5pm on the Sunday.

Tickets cost £11.50 for adults, but road.cc users who book using our special promotional code can get in for a tenner. To get your discount when buying tickets, visit www.cycleshow.co.uk/rcc - the ticket offer code is RCC, and the ticket price is £10.

For more information on the show, visit www.cycleshow.co.uk.

I've always thought of myself as a giver so I'll be going penny for penny with Dasy on this one 1

To save on the complicated maths at the end, I'm happy to stump up the first 50p regardless of his exact ultimate mileage.

Caveat being he does need to do the whole thing, I'm not just chucking this sort of cash about willy-nilly...

36,000 miles is a long way to raise £1! 3

Not the most ambitious target I've ever heard, but it's a start!

If my reading of other round-the-world cyclists' reports is anything to go by, he'll have his work cut out keeping emissions to zero in rural asia 19 19

Well, I expect him to breeze through the desert, glide through Siberia and eat up the Andes. The real challenge will come when he returns to the UK, gets run off the road by white van man, and has his bike pinched when he stops at the shops for a twix.

If he needs a map to get out of a field the round the world part might not be such a doddle either
