To the OP...
..Altura I have always found to be quite roomy around the waste. As others have said - go for full zipper rather than the neck zipper. The quality wont be as good as Castelli as you'd probably guess.
Another option is to look at some of the mountain biking kit. Some firms do baggie tops and shorts (foska, altura, decathlon). Some other places like sports direct or walking/camping shops do more generic sports clothing in wicking fabrics that might be another option.
I'm a similar size and usually wear a pair of the BTwin 500 series bib-shorts from Decathlon, in an XL size (there's a 2XL too).
They are fairly cheap but the pad has seen me right for rides of more than 3 hours and no problems with "comfort" breaks either. I've been doing well on the weight loss anyway so my thinking is not to spend a fortune on gear that might be too big in 6 months' time.
Good thing with bibs is they do a good job at keeping the flabbier bits in check (bit like those control pants your wife/mum/nan might wear...) so it gives a more flattering profile for wearing jerseys, which I can sometimes find are a bit tight around the old beer gut!
I am not exactly 'Slightly' overweight. 36/38 waist, 46 chest. Short legs
Do not know what size bib short to get.(OK I know, with those dimensions I should not consider lycra!) However, the other issue is comfort breaks, how easy!
Believe me at my age this is important.
I'm a 38 waist and 44 chest (though over 6 foot). I get away with a XXL bibshort.
For toilet duties I tend to ride in the slightly lower cut bibs anyway and they're easier to pull down for a pee.
I've always bought XL shorts for a 36" waist and M jerseys for a 40" chest. They still all fit; only the belly inbetween seems to object. Nothing says you have to go Large Large. Get bibshorts to avoid gaps, better than elastic topped shorts.
Try full zip jerseys. They are much more forgiving of anatomical inconsistencies. Merino also hides flab well.
