Silly question re gears but?
If I am on the smallest ring at front and the largest at back am I in the highest or lowest gear in cycling speak?

Lowest or better way to think about it is, easier gear to turn
You can equate bicycle gear language with car talk. Move-off gear in a car would usually be first, which is the lowest of the five on my car.
What you need is lots of action at the engine end but not too much at the wheels, just like on your bike.
That will be the lowest gear
