I see Boone has decide after all not to ride Amstel Gold as he says he is still tired from the cobbles. Fair enough eh..or maybe he over did the partying
I tested myself on the Cauberg, just walking up it
Just read that Boonen talked about Amstel before P-R. Said that he's going:
1. To ride for Chavanel;
2. To gain experience of the race for a possible future attempt to win it;
3. To test himself on the terrain ahead of the World Champs; and
4. To (maybe) test himself on the Cauberg.
he's on top form but i can't see him winning amstel gold. can anyone else?
It is possible, but unlikely, we don't need to look that far back into history (there may be others) but i'm thinking Jan Raas, He backed up alot of classic wins with the Amstel in the late 70's early 80's and did the P-R and Amstel in 82
Even with Gilbert's recent form, i'd think he's got more chance this year over Boonen
Nope, his form must be coming off soon...
No, can't see him winning it. I'd guess he's going to ride for teammates rather than a personal win. And maybe just trying to let his form come down more gently, rather than dropping off a cliff.
That said, with the form he has been in, it can't hurt to turn up and see where he ends up. Stranger things have happened in cycling...
Considering he's never ridden this Classic before, can't see why he's in it to be honest?
Yeah he's got as much chance of winning every stage he enters as i have of building my new velodrome on the moon.
Of course he isn't going to win everything, he'll be in the OPQ team for at least one of the grand tours, So he's not going to win every day for a couple of weeks
He'll obviously just put a motor in his downtube.
Amstel Gold will be very tough for him. I think he'll struggle up the 17% gradient! Punchy climbers will make him struggle.
He is phenomenal .... just wish Cancellara had been there too!
Why?
He will have focused the majority of his objectives around the early season, in particular the classics. He won't be like this in July.
