Replacing rims
Reading the last copy of the CTC mag Chris Juden has an article on how to replace your rims. It seems very simple to me and also very timely in that my open pro rim exploded the week before the mag dropped.
Anyway the hubs are still good and decent rims are relatively cheap so I'm thinking of giving it a go. I have a truing stand and from the article this seems to be enough. So why don't I just do it? Well its a rear wheel and I'm sure there's some reason why the tensions should be different on the drive side. It's only for my winter bike and at the very worst it can serve as my turbo wheel.
Maybe this just isnt that important as Chris didn't mention it - I also have a feeling that wheelbuilders like to keep a certain mistique around the 'art'. Be interested in hearing experiences.

cheers LocalSurfer - that's a useful site. Ambrosio Excursion rims now ordered!
Go to Edd's calculator http://lenni.info/edd/ and it'll work out the spoke lengths you need.
Stick in an open pro and then an ambrosio with any old hub and if the numbers don't change more than one or two mm then you're fine.
tape old and new rim together, swap one spoke over at a
time .... job done
Like your thinking LocalSurfer! I was going to go for some ambosio rims as they look about the same depth - do spoke lenghts vary that much? I'm guessing you can cope with a few mm difference?
Oh, make sure you replace the rim with another open pro, or you'll need new spokes of a different length, probably.
It's pretty easy. Even easier is to get it 90% of the way there and then take to the LBS to finish off.
Tell them your mate built it, and you think he's a numpty if you're embarrased by his/your wonky build. That's what I do anyway...

Put it all together, if it looks right, it most likely is.
There are guides on youtube to this sort of thing, I don't have a truing stand, just my best guess eye, get it to when I am happy and then take it to the LBS just to be sure, normally they just tighten it up a little for me.
