Bottle throwers

Just been attacked whilst cycling, had a boy racer speed up behind me and start bibbing because he couldn't pass on a narrow road. When he did pass the passenger hung out the window shouted abuse and threw a bottle hard into my front wheel.

Fortunately I managed to hang onto the bike and got his registration so pretty shaken up but unhurt. Police are out looking for them now.

People I know who ride horses and drive tractors say they get the same s**t we do, along with bus drivers, lorry drivers etc.
Anyone who impedes the progress of the grown up children behind too many steering wheels

Glad that you are ok. A rather worrying thing is the comment from the copper? Is it an assumption that you called it on yourself by doing something or a genuine ‘people aren’t like that are they?’ moment.

For tractors it’s a bit of the might is right attitude as it would write off their piece of crap motor so they back off, same for Lorries. They only beep when they are past and that’s a bit like calling someone something and running away knowing they can’t catch you. As for horses it could be one of a few things as in it’s an animal and we love the furry little critters or it’s a big thing that will damage my piece of crap motor so I’ll back off. That said I have seen one complete tosser drive far too close to people on horses with his horn blaring causing one of them to go mental and take off across the field through a fence, a bit too close to me for my liking I nearly crapped myself getting out of its way, she managed to hold on to it to her credit. That just proves, to me at least, that there are some drivers who couldn’t care less for the people on the back of the horse so what chance have we got. 2

Sadly it definitely sounds like knobheads going through life with no concerns/care for the consequences of their actions.

And now there are 3... that is recent threads written by cyclists who have been abused for no reason, other than getting into some idiots way (see my thread W***ers 'r' us).

What I've still not got my head around is why tractors and horse riders, who hold drivers up for longer than cyclists don't get the abuse.

I suspect it's because all some drivers see is that if we rode in the gutter they could squeeze past. Too many drivers do genuinely believe that if a cyclist is riding out from the kerb, they're in the wrong.

If the safety campaigns spread the message that cyclists should be out from the kerb, as far as being in the middle of the road in places instead of "look out for cyclists" which I don't think makes a blind bit of difference to anyone's driving habits, I'd like to think it'd diffuse some of that anger. You'd still get some idiots who hate cyclists full stop, but at least the abuse from uninformed people who genuinely think they're in the right and you're in the wrong would reduce.

People don't think through their actions, I'm sure, when "dealing" with cyclists. The abuse is almost inhumane at times!

Tw@ts! Hopefully police will do something, though they'll probably view it as little more than antisocial behaviour, TBH

With types like these I admit to sometimes pointing out, in response to abuse, 'my bike's worth more than your car, you f***ing chav'! That usually goes down well, I find*

*I am in no way recommending getting involved in disputes on the public highway with random people who may choose to use their vehicle as a weapon..

They did come out quickly and are going to pay the driver a visit but it goes under the catch-all "public order" offence.

It's a bit depressing an expired tax disc is a more serious crime despite the fact that what they did could have caused serious injury had I not kept the bike upright, especially if I'd gone under the wheels of the car behind!

The police officer who came out to take a statement seemed to find it hard to believe someone would just start hurling abuse for no good reason. He's clearly never spent much time on a bike in the UK...
