installign new brakes - help?
So I'm upgrading my brakes calipers to some 105's from shimano.
A simple task you would think - except I can't find my cable cutters to make a nice neat cut.(anyway, that's not my problem)
I have standard rims (ie not deep) and the calipers have a 49mm drop however, when I press the calipers down onto the rim to install the cable the pads are nowhere near the rims, they are well up onto the tyre.
What I am doing wrong here? I pads are as far down on the caliper arms as they can go, but it's not long enough.
Any ideas?

Shimano R650 calipers (Ultegra level) are supposedly noticeably better than the cheaper R450s.
Tektro R539 are a good alternative to Shimano for long-drop (57mm) calipers and are available in silver and black.
Yes, you might need Shimano R650 non-series brakes, eg:

They're equal to 105 quality.
ah, I didn't consider there being a 'short' drop.
shame, as I've just upgraded all components to the 105 series, which do look striking in black against my red/white frame.

Sounds like your frame/forks need medium drop brakes rather than short drop - suggest you measure the drop on the old brakes you took off to check.... If the frame was designed (for example) to have mudguard clearance then the gap between the tyre and the fork bridge is larger meaning longer drops are required.
