Right, we’ve waded through the 1220 comments you left about what you like most about autumn cycling which included having to read POEMS (note to self, never, ever, ever ask people to do that again) but the psychic trauma has been worth it. We have a winner… and because the standard of entries was so high a couple of bonus runners up too who will be getting some roadcc socks.
Our Vulpine Schwag Grab podium is filled by the speakers of two universal cycling truths and one rather personal truth.
Almost but not quite for robbiezhaorobbiezhao for masterful use of the sympathy card with “The cold rivals that of the heart of my wife” - until you realise that it’s not really that cold at this time of the year, even in East Anglia. (Maybe we should send her some socks too.)
Socks also for tells-it-like-it-is “I just love wearing tights” from wrevilo but somehow it lacks the poe… magic of our winner the tells it like it even more is:
“Shining torch through the fog/mist whilst making light saber noises. Obviously…” by Mattclimb
Yep, that's autumn!
Our winner and runners up have been informed - those who posted poems about nature’s paintbrush turning the trees the colours of their fave beige Vulpine shorts - your names are on a list. First offence, but don’t push it eh.
Thanks to Vulpine for a fab competition, thanks to all of you who entered, commiserations to the 1219 of you that didn’t win, but there WILL be another schwag grab along soon.
=====================================================================================
The whole caboodle is worth more than £500 (£502 to be precise) and includes Vulpine’s:
Original Rain Jacket
Cotton rain trousers
Long Sleeve Merino T-shirt/base layer
Padded Merino Boxer/Boyshorts
Storm Cap
Dogtooth Merino Silk Socks
We’ll pick the lucky winner next Monday, usual Schwag Grab rules apply.
You can find out more about Vulpine's autmn/winter range at www.vulpine.cc
Good luck!

Autumn makes me feel fresh and alive during my morning rides as I head out in the crisp cold air quite often with some nice areas of ground frost covering the grass. I also like to look at the leaves on the trees and compare all the different colours as there are so many different hues of browns this time of year.
When I get to the hills I like to look out over the valleys to view the mist shrouding the trees.
Braving the cold and reaching the top of climbs and seeing the mist in the valley bottom.
Cold crisp mornings contradicting the warmth and glow of the sun. The bright autumnal leaves changing the landscape and falling making you sit as you climb to avoid too much spin. Hill climbs highlighting the racing season is coming to a close and that cafe stops can recomence guilt free as miles become more important. Most of all I just love riding my bike.
Crisp days and sunshine.
Shorter queues in the cafe and more choice of buns.
Autumn: Not too hot, a deep cool breath before you set off, glorious colours on my ride through the Surrey Hills and not having to top up so often on fluids. The best time of year to enjoy a ride.
Without doubt the changing colours and landscapes.
Autumn riding allows you to earn some tough man stripes before the winter. It's the time to reset, set goals and embrace the dynamic weather and to seek the rewards. Your strava KOMs are also worth double and tend to last a lot longer....
The thought of a steaming cuppa after battling through a headwind and wiping leaf detritus of your face
I love autumn as its a good excuse to buy/win more cycle clothes & kit!
Steaming hot cup of tea and a bacon sarnie consumed in autumn sunshine at the top of Box Hill. Heaven.
Having to guess where the road is under the leaves
You never know what you're going to get - one minute it's sunny, then the wind picks up, then it's raining, then it's a bit misty. Just makes everything that bit more interesting.
Those rare rides when you can still feel warm sun on the back of your neck...
It’s another dimension to your cycling thrill
Misty days and chills,
Leafs sodden that lay still
Water laying at the bottom of the Hills
A quick kiss farewell dear
But to allay her fear
Bright flashing lights front and rear
Hoping they stops cars getting far to near
Ride out to show you’re made of sterner stuff
Time for fingered gloves and a patterned buff
That last years overshoes are not duff
Trusting the extra bright layers are quite enough
A brisk ride on quiet country lanes in bright autumn sunlight, in temperatures that aren't too hot, not too cold, enjoying freedom of movement and comfort thanks to clothing that's been well designed and performs as if it isn't there.
Getting out just as the sun rises on a Sunday and hopefully not a cloud in the sky. Walking out the door and feeling the chill and seeing your breath. The smell of fallen leaves and seeing that early morning mist rise from the fields. No-one around just me enjoying the beauty of an Autumn morning.
Just seeing how far into the season I can get away with the shorts and short sleeves before having to dig out the tights and long sleeves...
Waiting for winter
The sunsets and sunrises are more in line with a regular commute hence a better chance of enjoying some amazing views both going to and coming back from work. The colours of fall in general and that crisp morning freshness acting as a natural caffeine source.
Great prize!! Rain gear is always welcome!
Crisp mornings, early start, no smelly tube
The changing colours of trees and fields , frosty mornings , gearing up for Rule No5.
Not too hot, not too cold, yet... though the rain is a bit of a turnoff.
The reverence of precious light, the richness of all auburn shades, the eeriness of virgin mist, the crispy breath that fires the heart, the grounding crackle on the leaves, the rubber squeaking on moist roads, the mumbled echo of great rides, the hypnotic sound of sprocket clicks, that segment Strava said I am meek, the peace of summer moments gone, the ale awaiting in the warm, the life for which time won't stand still, ephemeral but not bygone, those autumn rides that soothed the soul.
wrapping up and going out on a cold morning only for the day to turn to a glorious sunny day.
One word: cyclocross!
It's when your senses kick in- Being able to smell your way around with the aromas coming off the countryside, and feeling the subtle changes in temperature as you ride through cuttings, embankments and open spaces!
Racing the setting sun and trying to get home before you freeze or get caught out without lights because you were only going to go out for a 'quick spin' that would have seen you home in daylight last week. Only to discover it's not that dark......you've just still wearing your shades
I like the lottery of the British weather - you wake up not knowing what you are going to get.
