Right, we’ve waded through the 1220 comments you left about what you like most about autumn cycling which included having to read POEMS (note to self, never, ever, ever ask people to do that again) but the psychic trauma has been worth it. We have a winner… and because the standard of entries was so high a couple of bonus runners up too who will be getting some roadcc socks.
Our Vulpine Schwag Grab podium is filled by the speakers of two universal cycling truths and one rather personal truth.
Almost but not quite for robbiezhaorobbiezhao for masterful use of the sympathy card with “The cold rivals that of the heart of my wife” - until you realise that it’s not really that cold at this time of the year, even in East Anglia. (Maybe we should send her some socks too.)
Socks also for tells-it-like-it-is “I just love wearing tights” from wrevilo but somehow it lacks the poe… magic of our winner the tells it like it even more is:
“Shining torch through the fog/mist whilst making light saber noises. Obviously…” by Mattclimb
Yep, that's autumn!
Our winner and runners up have been informed - those who posted poems about nature’s paintbrush turning the trees the colours of their fave beige Vulpine shorts - your names are on a list. First offence, but don’t push it eh.
Thanks to Vulpine for a fab competition, thanks to all of you who entered, commiserations to the 1219 of you that didn’t win, but there WILL be another schwag grab along soon.
=====================================================================================
The whole caboodle is worth more than £500 (£502 to be precise) and includes Vulpine’s:
Original Rain Jacket
Cotton rain trousers
Long Sleeve Merino T-shirt/base layer
Padded Merino Boxer/Boyshorts
Storm Cap
Dogtooth Merino Silk Socks
We’ll pick the lucky winner next Monday, usual Schwag Grab rules apply.
You can find out more about Vulpine's autmn/winter range at www.vulpine.cc
Good luck!

Cold commute followed by a warm shower!
Crisp mornings...
The best thing about Autumn rides is the cool breeze on your cheeks as you fly past semi-bare trees while car drivers wonder what kind of a lunatic you are being out at this time of year
... the training can taper and be replaced with the pure love of just riding
Love those dry crisp chilly mornings
Being able to commute and not being so warm I have to stop halfway to take my jacket off.
Riding out the door into the mist, buff over the nose, everything tinged with that orange streetlight glow, up the hill not that you can see it, crest and reveal the weak glow of the sunrise on the horizon. Push on head down, occasional car with a driver bundled in scarves giving the inquisitive eye, who is this crazy on the bike, warm blood pushes into the limbs in time with the brightening sky, sun peppers exposed skin with occasional teases of forgotten summer heat. The face is hidden, but the eyes show the rider is smiling.
I love Autumn riding, its always the time i start getting really stuck in to riding after a waning interest in the late summer.
I love the autumn for the wetter weather, the slippy leaves on the road, the blinding lower sun in the mornings, the need for tights and long sleeves, the fact that there are less light hours in the day and finally, the fact that all these things weed out the fair weather riders until next year.
My favourite thing about cycling in autumn is the cycling! Being on a bike is awesome whenever, wherever and whatever for.
I like the crisp air through my lungs on an autumn morning when the mist is still rising from nearby fields. I like the crunch of tyres of freshly fallen leaves. But most of all to hear and see the migrating birds overhead, which reminds me of the freedom a bike represents.
being dressed just right, when the rain comes on, and the smell of the rain - that's three things!
The cold of the air. The unexpected cool breeze. The extra layers of clothing. The warmth of being bundled up. Less sweat. The feeling you could ride forever in this weather. The color of the leaves. The mess of leaves on the ground. The cold my handlebars feel. The feeling that the world has changed and summer is gone.
I love autumn riding as for every cold and wet ride at this time of year guarantees you two Hot and sunny days come the summer!
Favourite thing about cycling in the Autumn? It's not as cold and miserable as Winter
Being able to wear more great clothes innit
For me, it's the changing scenery, and the leaves on the ground keeping you on your toes when it comes to bike handling! It's nice to layer up in the morning and end up jersey only in the afternoon too
Lovely fresh mornings for cycling in to work
When you roll out as the mist lies on the fields and the first light breaks the dawn to reveal the golden hue of changing trees and you smile at the sky and feel alive.
Sad farewell to short sleeve tops & shorts, hello long sleeves & 3/4 knickers.
Crisp and cold mornings - or did I mean cold and damp!
A cool crisp morning and brilliant blue sky, out riding my bike - can't beat it!
I love Autumn for cycling, the crisp air, the golden orange brown colours and getting wrapped up in bright layers on the bike.
The sharpness of the cold hitting your exposed face when you first start out, racing the fading light and the blur of lounge lights as you pedal past teatime homes.
It feels a bit more special, like being a member of an exclusive club, not just someone out on a bike but a night riding ninja, more cat-like, senses awakened, heightened and alive.
Autumn is my favourite time for riding.
Those sunny days without the baking heat, nice clean crisp air.
My favourite thing about autumn riding is the quality of the light, and all the different colours this reveals. The light and the colours are so much easier to appreciate from the saddle of my bicycle than from the seat of a bus or a car!
stripping down the good bike and putting it to bed until the weather is back
stripping down the good bike and putting it to bed until the weather is back
Cycling in cold weather is great!
You sweat less!
The early chill, the ten minutes of hell before the blood starts pumping and that first coffee does its job, the glow to the east, getting out of town as others wake, the mist over the rivers, your temperature building, the sun creeping up, the breathless climbs, the warmth spreading, the wind behind you, the last sprint. And home.
I love cycling in the autumn because... it means I'm cycling.
What? What else do you need?
Hi-viz orange, if it's coming my way.....
Knowing that all those "summer" cyclists will be off the road and out of the way
